Preceptors with the WSU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences are critical in our mission to educate the next generation of health care providers and scientists.

The Introductory and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE or APPE) are at the foundation of our PharmD program, providing hands-on opportunities for our students to apply the knowledge gained from their didactic courses. Our partners deserve a tremendous thank you for their work!

Become a Rotation Partner

Those interested in becoming a preceptor for PharmD rotation experiences can reach out to the Office of Experiential Services which manages IPPE and APPE rotation experiences and works directly with our partner sites.

Experiential Services reviews each new preceptor or site request and takes into consideration several factors, including capacity with current partners, regional placement areas, and site/preceptor experience when evaluating. We look forward to exploring a partnership with you!

Current Preceptors

Those currently precepting WSU CPPS students have accounts in our rotation management system, CORE ELMS. Multiple resources are linked on the CORE ELMS “Document Library” for our partners, this includes our Student and Preceptor IPPE and APPE manuals, templates (i.e. syllabi, action plans), rotation block dates, free CE and more! This software is used to set schedules, as well as to collect and distribute evaluations. Read our FAQs for more information about the CORE software.

WSU is part of the Northwest Pharmacy Experiential Consortia (NWPEC) which works together to address opportunities and challenges for experiential education and our partners. The NWPEC works together annually to coordinate APPE rotation block dates when possible.

Experiential Services reaches out to rotation partners annually between Aug-Oct to collect site placement availability for the coming rotation year. This is a lengthy process and we appreciate your patience. Student schedules are then released to sites no later than the end of March for the upcoming rotation year which starts in May.

Preceptor Development

All preceptors have access to CEImpact which provides free CE opportunities related to precepting, as well as some other CE opportunities available at cost. Access to CEImpact is available through the CPPS Rotation Management software system (CORE ELMS). Please login and view the homepage for resources and instructions.

Experiential Services provides quarterly newsletters, “Preceptor Highlights” to those active with the program. These provide updates, helpful resources and CE suggestions. Links to past editions can be found righthand in the right hand column under “Preceptor Highlights Newsletter.”

Preceptors of the Year are recognized at the annual Crimson Gala

Preceptor of the Year

Preceptor of the year award is given annually to a WSU pharmacy preceptor for outstanding contributions to the educational development of future WSU pharmacists by demonstrating high standards of professionalism, ethics and clinical practice within the experiential training environment.

Affiliate Faculty Appointment Process

To share our appreciation WSU CPPS extends affiliate (adjunct) faculty appointments (per WSU guidelines) to those with sustained engagement with the experiential IPPE/APPE rotation program. Affiliate faculty appointments are not required or automatically processed when an individual becomes a preceptor, this must be requested. Individuals engaged in precepting can request an appointment at any time. An affiliate appointment extends other privileges to preceptors, including WSU library access. These are 3-year terms always set to begin July 1 and expire June 30.

The first step for those engaged with our IPPE/APPE program is to request an affiliate appointment using the link above, this can be used both for new and renewal appointment requests. When completing an affiliate appointment request form, you will submit information about your engagement with WSU CPPS, contact information and a current CV. New appointments will be contacted for additional information.

Once all information needed for an appointment has been collected and verified it generally takes 2 weeks for the appointment to be processed. If you previously held an appointment under a different name in addition to the CPPS faculty affiliate request, you will need to submit a name change form through WSU Payroll Services.

Once the appointment is completed, the process to generate WSU credentials for the appointee begins. WSU credentials include a WSU Network ID (NID) and WSU ID number, which is required to be able to access privilege such as the WSU libraries. At minimum this will take 1 week but can take longer.

You will receive an auto-generated invitation email from This will have instructions on how to activate your WSU Network ID/NID (username) and password at Record your information somewhere safe, this includes:

  • WSU Network ID (i.e. B.Cougar)
