Student Honored for Volunteer Work

A WSU pharmacy student has earned national recognition for her volunteer work with people with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease in Spokane.

Lindy Wood, who will graduate from the WSU College of Pharmacy in May, is one of a handful of pharmacy students from across the nation selected for a Wal-Mart/Pharmacy Times award for service in pharmacy, which includes a $1,000 scholarship and her profile published in the February 2009 issue of the national magazine Pharmacy Times.

Campbell, White Release New Diabetes Medications Book

College of Pharmacy Professors R. Keith Campbell and John R. White are co-authors of a new book for the American Diabetes Association titled, “Medications for the Treatment of Diabetes.”

The ADA calls the 548-page book “The Most Authoritative Guide to Diabetes Therapeutics Available.” It was printed by the publishers of the Physicians’ Desk Reference – Thomson Reuters of Montvale, New Jersey.

It is an updated edition of a book Campbell and White wrote that was released in 2000 and is part of the ADA’s Medical Management Series for health care professionals.

Meadows Receives NIH Senior Scientist Award

Gary Meadows, a College of Pharmacy professor at WSU since 1976, has received a Senior Scientist Research and Mentorship Award from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

The five-year, $1 million grant is to provide him with more time for research and to mentor three to five junior faculty at WSU.

Between two and five such awards are granted annually by the NIAAA. Records dating back to 1972 indicate this is the first Senior Scientist award received at WSU.

Class of 2012 Arrives in Pullman

The Pharmacy Class of 2012 is similar to other recent classes: there are more women than men, the average age is 25.3, and 68 of the 92 students already have bachelor’s degrees.

One slight difference is there are more students from California. Last year there was one from California; this year there are 15.

WSU Places in Top 5 of NCPA Business Plan Finals

A team of pharmacy students from Washington State University recently placed in the top five in a national business plan competition, continuing a winning streak set by teams in previous years.

WSU students have entered the competition four of the five years it has been held and have placed in the top five all four years.

They took first place once and second place twice. Only the top three teams advance to the final round of competition in October. Those teams this year are the University of Arizona, the University of Kansas and Samford University.

Dietitian Joins Dean’s Council

Holly Trujillo of Bonney Lake, Wash., is the newest member of the Dean’s Advisory Council and the first nutrition graduate to serve on the board. She attended her first meeting March 28, 2008.

Trujillo is the 2007-2008 president of the Washington State Dietetic Association and has a private practice as a dietitian. She is a 1998 WSU graduate. The nutrition program was merged into the College of Pharmacy in July 2007.

Fassett is Pharmacy Law Journal Editor

William E. Fassett has been named editor of the bimonthly print newsletter and the monthly electronic newsletter of the American Society for Pharmacy Law.

Fassett is the first non-attorney editor of the print newsletter, which was started when the ASPL was formed in 1974, and the second WSU pharmacy professor to hold the appointment. For many years – 1975 to 1997 – the newsletter was developed and edited by Larry M. Simonsmeier, a now-retired WSU pharmacy professor and former dean of the College of Pharmacy.

The electronic newsletter is new and in its second year of publication.

2008 Graduates Choose Retail, Hospitals

About 70 percent of our May 2008 pharmacy graduates plan to work in a retail setting, according to an exit survey answered by 74 of the 89 graduates. Hospital pharmacy was the next largest employer after chain and independent pharmacies, attracting 17 of our students. Another 16 students planned to do a residency where they will get one year of more specialized pharmacy education.

All but one student said they worked a paying job at some time during pharmacy school, with 60 of the 74 saying at least some of their work was in a community pharmacy. About one-half the students were working 10 to … » More …

Stanley is Preceptor of the Year

Tom Stanley, a pharmacist at Safeway in Spokane since 1989, was selected by the College to receive its 2008 Roche Preceptor of the Year award. The award was presented at the senior brunch held prior to commencement on May 2. Stanley has been a preceptor for WSU fourth-year students for many years. The annual Preceptor of the Year award goes to a practitioner for their outstanding contributions to the educational development of future pharmacists by demonstrating high standards of professionalism, ethics and clinical practice.

Quock, Reynolds are Teachers of the Year for 2007-08

Raymond M. Quock and Jonathan Reynolds were selected by Pharm.D. students as Teachers of the Year for 2007-08.

Quock joined the College in January 1999 and is chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He has a Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Washington.

Quock lectures in neuropharmacology, psychopharmacology and drug abuse to second-year Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) students. He also is the supervising instructor for the graduate-level therapeutics course. In recognition of his outstanding teaching skills, Quock was named to the WSU President’s Teaching Academy in 2004.
