When a spike in COVID-19 cases made Yakima county a West Coast hot spot for the disease, Yakima Doctor of Pharmacy students quickly stepped up to help with mitigation efforts. Working alongside the Yakima Health District and the US National Guard, WSU student pharmacists volunteered to help direct people in improvised testing centers. The college sat down with third-year pharmacy student Brian Wu to hear about the experience.

Most residents of the predominantly Latino town work in the acres of surrounding orchards, picking fruit that end up in supermarkets halfway around the world. This is where 26-year-old Osmark Jauregui, part of WSU’s PharmD inaugural Yakima class, found his calling as a pharmacist.
Approximately 1 in 5 individuals in South Africa have HIV. The country is one of the largest epicenters of the HIV epidemic in the world with 7.7 million people living with the disease. That’s nearly the population of New York City. In the summer of 2019, WSU student pharmacists visited Cape Town, South Africa, to work with patients, doctors and pharmacists at health care institutions, allowing them to see the frontlines of HIV treatment and prevention, including application of precision medicine.
