As COVID-19 swept through the nation, many institutes of higher education were faced with the prospect of suddenly moving instruction to a virtual setting. The WSU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (CPPS) was no exception. With only a few days’ notice, the CPPS IT team had to spring to action to provide the IT infrastructure for nearly 700 students and 160 faculty and staff to work from home as the Washington state governor issued a mandated stay-at-home order in March.

Since Washington State University launched their Doctor of Pharmacy Yakima extension in 2015, students interested in learning about rural health care in a medically underserved area have pursued their PharmD degree in the scenic Yakima Valley. In a year unlike any other, graduates found themselves finishing their time at WSU in ways they never could have imagined. To celebrate virtually with our students, Governor Jay Inslee, Macklemore and a few other celebrities stepped in to lift their spirits with virtual well wishes.

The hard work of students, faculty, and staff are essential to the success of any college and help us thrive in an ever-changing health care landscape. As such, every year the college takes a moment to recognize just a few of these students, faculty, and staff who demonstrate excellence in all that they do.

The Chancellor’s Awards are bestowed annually to students, faculty, staff and community partners who advance leadership and engagement at WSU Health Sciences. Recipients of these awards demonstrate exceptional leadership and service to the university and the community and/or support leadership development and engagement of WSU students. Of the 15 awards, six hail from the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
