In 2016, the Janet Ruth Warren Financial Need Scholarship Fund was established at Washington State University’s College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to honor a woman whose life was defined by resilience, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to her family.
Janet Ruth Warren raised seven children—often under extraordinarily difficult circumstances. After her husband left, she became the sole provider, balancing the demands of work and motherhood while ensuring her children had access to education and opportunity. What could have been a breaking point became a defining chapter of perseverance.

She eventually found stability as a bookkeeper for a Spokane medical practice, where she worked for more than four decades, retiring at the remarkable age of 88. Through every challenge, Janet remained a steady force—demonstrating that determination and quiet strength can shape generations. All seven of her children went on to receive a college education; four of them attended WSU.
Today, her legacy lives on through student pharmacists enduring similar challenges. The scholarship’s first recipient was a single mother who immigrated to the United States in search of a better life. This student worked part-time while pursuing her PharmD full-time—embodying the same grit and resolve that defined Janet’s life. Since its inception, the scholarship has supported three students through pharmacy school.
This scholarship exists for students who face steep financial and personal barriers—those from low-income backgrounds, single-parent households, or those raising families while pursuing their dreams. It ensures that hardship does not stand in the way of becoming a pharmacist.
After more than 40 years in pharmacy, Janet’s son, Ian Warren (’89), who established the fund in her honor—now faces a personal battle with cancer. Yet even in this moment, his focus remains on creating opportunities for the next generation.
This is more than a scholarship. It is a lifeline.
A gift to the Janet Ruth Warren Financial Need Scholarship Fund directly supports students who are working tirelessly to build better futures for themselves and their families—just as Janet once did.
