Awards

  • Brian Gates, PharmD, BCGP, received the Rod Shafer Distinguished Leadership Award at the WSPA Annual Meeting on November 9, 2024. This award honors a leader whose career has been instrumental in advancing the pharmacy profession and profoundly impacting healthcare, their workplace, and the community.
  • John White, PharmD, PA-C, received the Rod Shafer Leadership Award at the WSPA Annual Meeting on November 9, 2024. This award pays tribute to leaders who have significantly shaped the pharmacy profession through their dedication, influence, and commitment to the community, workplace, and the entire health profession.
  • Kari Gaither presented a poster titled “Proteomic Changes in Human Hepatocytes Treated with Alcohol and its Association with the Liver Tissue Proteome from Donors with Alcohol Exposure” at the Annual Meeting of Pacific Northwest Association for Toxicologists Society of Toxicology Regional Chapter held in Lynwood, WA, USA (Sept 29 – 30, 2024). Gaither’s work, received strong interest and high praise and was awarded best Postdoctoral Poster Award, highlighting the interest of her research in the toxicological fields. Her research, which explores alcohol-induced changes in protein expression of drug and xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes and transporters, has translational significance with the aim to elucidate potential interactions of alcohol with other substances, and better understand the mechanisms behind these changes.

Student Achievement

Pharmaceutical Sciences and Molecular Medicine students

  • Mahder Belew (graduate student, Cheng lab), Jingrui Chen (research associate, Cheng lab), and Pharmaceutical Sciences Associate Professor Zhaokang Cheng published, “Emerging roles of cyclin-dependent kinase 7 in health and diseases” in Trends in Molecular Medicine, which provides concise and contextualized views on the latest research moving biomedical science closer to improved diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of human diseases. https://www.cell.com/trends/molecular-medicine/fulltext/S1471-4914(24)00243-0
Anoud Ailabouni – Prasad lab
  • Anoud Ailabouni attended the Pacific Northwest Association of Toxicologists (PANWAT) meeting held in Lynnwood, WA, on September 29-30, 2024. PANWAT, a regional chapter of the Society of Toxicology (SOT), serves toxicology professionals and students across the Pacific Northwest, covering diverse areas such as environmental, pharmaceutical, energy, and wildlife toxicology. The meeting provided a collaborative platform for scientists, researchers, and students to share knowledge, research findings, and advancements in toxicology.

Anoud participated in the graduate student poster competition and was awarded first place. In her presentation, she introduced external factors (such as cimetidine administration) and internal factors (like genetic polymorphisms) that can influence organic cation transporter (OCT) function, potentially affecting the disposition of exogenous (e.g., metformin) and endogenous OCT substrates. This research holds significance for predicting OCT-mediated drug-drug interactions and their impact on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of OCT drug substrates. Additionally, this work highlights the association of OCT activity with tissue toxicity mediated by altering endogenous substrates disposition.
