The Washington State University (WSU) College of Pharmacy has received renewed funding from the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) for its Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program.
The college’s SURF program has received funding from ASPET for over 10 years. The newest renewal will provide $27,000 to fund the program for the next three years.
Based in Spokane, Washington, the SURF program provides undergraduate and professional students from WSU and other schools in Spokane opportunities to gain exposure to the research environment at an R1 research-intensive university. Summer undergraduate fellows actively contribute to research efforts under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
Each fellow receives a $2,800 stipend to participate in a 10-week summer rotation in a pharmaceutical or biomedical research lab. For students interested in pursuing graduate studies or careers in research, the program not only provides early, hands-on research experience but also the opportunity to connect with the research community and potential faculty research mentors within WSU and across the country.
The WSU pharmacy SURF program contributes to the university’s institutional strategic plan to offer a transformative educational experience to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Research at the WSU College of Pharmacy supports the university’s land-grant mission to address some of society’s most complex issues, specifically WSU’s efforts surrounding developing practical solutions to challenging problems in health care delivery, health care access and disease prevention.
