Distinguished Alumni Seminar: The Future of Pharmaceuticals: A Nonlinear Path to Healthcare
September 25 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Join us as we welcome biosimilars trailblazer and WSU alumnus Sarfaraz Niazi. Niazi is an internationally recognized pharmaceutical scientist, entrepreneur, author, and innovator whose pioneering work has helped shape the global biosimilars industry. Throughout a career spanning more than five decades, he has championed a singular mission: to make life-saving biological medicines more affordable and accessible for patients around the world. By advancing the science, manufacturing, and regulatory pathways of biosimilars, Niazi has worked to reduce development costs while maintaining the rigorous standards of quality, safety, and efficacy required for these complex therapies.
A 1971 graduate of Washington State University, Niazi earned his Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences before completing his doctorate at the University of Illinois Chicago. His education laid the foundation for a distinguished career that has bridged academia, industry, entrepreneurship, and public policy. Today, he serves as an affiliate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the WSU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences while advising biotechnology companies, regulatory agencies, and policymakers on the future of biologics and biosimilars.
Widely regarded as one of the early pioneers of the biosimilars movement, Niazi founded the first U.S. company dedicated to developing biosimilar medicines and has played an instrumental role in advancing regulatory science surrounding these therapies. His work has focused on streamlining development strategies that can accelerate patient access while reducing unnecessary costs and barriers to approval. Through decades of research and advocacy, he has consistently emphasized that innovation and affordability should go hand in hand.
