SUMMARY:HealthChats: Vaccines\, Flu Season and COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:What can we expect this flu season? Join WSU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences professors to discuss what we can expect this flu season\, how to protect yourself\, and implications for when a COVID-19 vaccine becomes available. \nJoin Via YouTube Live \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND?\nAnyone interested in science\, a career in the health care industry\, or the topic of diabetes. Whether you are a student\, teacher\, or counselor\, we encourage anyone interested in this topic to take part in this discussion. This is a chance to speak with health care professionals who can share more about what they do and their professional journey as pharmacists. \nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nKim McKeirnan\nMcKeirnan is an associate professor in the Department of Pharmacotherapy at the Washington State University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. McKeirnan has been nationally recognized for her work in improving immunization rates in rural areas\, developing a model for implementing chronic disease-state management services in community pharmacies\, and developing a pharmacy technician immunization training program. In her current role\, she continues to research ways to improve access to vaccinations. Her achievements at WSU includes creating the vaccine administration training program for pharmacy technicians\, which has since been adopted by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA)\, along with conducting research that supports expanding clinical services that can be provided in a community pharmacy.\n\n\n\n\nLinda Garrelts MacLean\nMacLean is vice dean for external relations for the Washington State University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. She is a past-president of the Washington State Pharmacy Association (WSPA) and a past trustee for the American Pharmacists Association (APhA)\, and a recipient of the Bowl of Hygeia Award\, the most widely recognized award amongst pharmacists who have distinguished themselves through action. She currently serves as the president of the board for BAVI Health and continues to advocate on behalf of pharmacists to be recognized as health care providers and compensated accordingly.\n\n\n\n\nNicole Rodin\nRodin is an assistant professor at the Washington State University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences who operates and teaches the point of care course for second-year student pharmacists. She and a team of WSU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty recently organized an on-campus option for vaccination certification training with second-year students on the Spokane and Yakima campus. Over 120 student pharmacists were certified to vaccinate during this training and will be able to administer flu shots and a COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available. Her current role allows her to work closely with the Spokane Regional Health District leading students in weekly interdisciplinary vaccination clinics to utilize these skills and expend community access to these important services.
