SUMMARY:HealthChats: Working in a Health Care Team
DESCRIPTION:  \nHow do doctors\, nurses and pharmacists work together to help their patients thrive? \nIn this upcoming HealthChats\, the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is honored to be joined by representatives from the College of Nursing and the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine to discuss the importance of working in a health care team and fostering an environment of peer-to-peer learning through a collaborative approach. The three faculty members work together to provide students an enriching learning environment in class and through programs like the Range Community Clinic\, a non-profit academic health network affiliated with WSU. It is the organization through which an interprofessional team of faculty practice medicine and deliver care to people while training medical and other health sciences students in clinical care. This is a chance to speak with health care professionals who can share their expertise. \nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nJulie Akers\, Associate Professor and Director of Health Outreach and External Residency Research\nCollege of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical SciencesAkers teaches pharmacy law and health care systems among other courses at the college and has over 20 years of experience working in pharmacy and with lawmakers to advocate for community pharmacies and increased patient access to health care. In her role as Director of Health Outreach and External Residency Research\, she is responsible for executing partnerships for health outreach services that will include student pharmacists as part of a health care team. Akers is a member of the BAVI Health Board of Directors\, which oversees the Range Community Clinic. She has served as the president of Washington State Pharmacy Association\, and was awarded Good Government Pharmacist-of-the-Year Award in 2019 by the American Pharmacists Association.\n\n\n\n\nMarian Wilson\, Associate Professor\nCollege of NursingWilson is a registered nurse and current project director on a grant from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA)\, which brings together students from different health professions to practice collaborative care in patients with substance use disorders. As part of the Interprofessional Opioid Curriculum core team (IPOC)\, Wilson works with fellow faculty members in pharmacy\, medicine\, nursing\, and social work to create interprofessional education with case studies focused on pain and opioids for students and practicing clinicians. She is certified in pain management nursing from the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the American Society for Pain Management Nursing and has been funded through the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)\, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA)\, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the National Institute of Health’s Center for Complementary and Integrative Heath (NCCIH) studying pain and opioid use and developing interprofessional education programs on the topic. Many of her 60+ peer-reviewed publications focus on engaging adults in pain self-management and reducing reliance on opioids.\n\n\n\n\nMichaelle Guerrero\, Practice Manager for Range Community Clinic \nGuerrero joined the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine in February 2020 and runs the day-to-day operations of the Range Community Clinic. Prior to that time\, she served more than 20 years in the US Air Force as a hospital administrator leading a wide variety of Department of Defense health care facilities at home and abroad. She is board-certified with the Health Information Management and Systems Society. Complementing her professional career\, Guerrero is active in a variety of civic organizations including the American Red Cross Inland Northwest Chapter\, Spokane Lilac Association\, and Leadership Spokane. Other accolades include award of the American Hospital Association Special Achievement Award and George Washington University Arthur S. Fleming Award.

DESCRIPTION:Moving microRNAs towards targeted therapy\nPresented by: Ai-Ming Yu; Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine\, UC Davis School or Medicine. \nDr. Yu’s research interests include noncoding RNA pharmacoepigenetics\, anticancer pharmacology and experimental therapeutics. The ultimate goal of his research is to translate noncoding RNAs to new therapies. Current efforts in his laboratory are directed to the investigation of (a) the mechanistic actions of microRNAs in the regulation of cancer cellular processes including drug/xenobiotic disposition and tumor progression and metastasis\, (b) novel RNA bioengineering technologies\, and (c) recombinant RNAs for basic research and drug development. \nDr. Yu also directs the PK/PD Bioanalytical Core Facility at UC Davis that provides services in support of the clinical and preclinical drug development programs\, and the Molecular Pharmacology Shared Resources that supports high-quality collection\, processing and analysis of clinical specimens and conducts preclinical modeling and evaluation of novel anticancer agents or combination. \nJoin via Zoom \nMeeting ID: 983 9445 1169\nPasscode: 805439
