SUMMARY:Career Seminar Series - Functional Medicine and Independent Pharmacy with Hillary Howell
DESCRIPTION:Functional Medicine and Independent Pharmacy: My journey building an innovative\, sustainable business model\nHillary Howell worked as a pharmacy technician until graduating high school in 1998. Her passion for medicine led her to receive her PharmD in 2004. Shortly after graduating\, she married her high school sweetheart and took a position as a retail staff pharmacist at a local pharmacy chain. This ultimately led to a manager position with the same company. \n10 years into her position as a manager\, her husband James was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer\, leiomyosarcoma of the prostate. During his journey\, the family decided to look into alternative treatments using both conventional and alternative therapies. Sadly\, James’ journey ended 18 months later. \nAs a single mother\, Hillary decided to take her career in a new direction. She opened Michigan’s first integrative cash based pharmacy\, Apothecary & Co\, in 2019\, focusing on helping others to find their root cause instead of applying a “bandaid.” Apothecary & Co proudly specializes in compounding\, point of care testing\, and functional medicine consulting. Since opening in 2019\, Hillary received her Certified Clinical Nutrition designation in 2021. She is currently pursuing a certification program through the Institute for Functional Medicine. Besides the love for functional medicine\, her other passion is medicinal herbalism leading her to complete coursework through Rosemary Gladstar’s The Science of Art and Herbalism program. \nThe presentation will take place on the Spokane campus in Walgreens auditorium (SPBS 101)\, Yakima students can watch the presentation from CSC101. All prospective students are also welcome to join this event virtually or in person. To RSVP\, please email pharmacy.admissions@wsu.edu.

SUMMARY:Cougs Give 2023
DESCRIPTION:April 12\, 2023\nWhat is #CougsGive?\n#CougsGive is a one-day online fundraising event dedicated to expanding\, sharing\, and celebrating donor impact at Washington State University. On April 12\, 2023\, we encourage Cougar family to consider how we support future generations\, grow our collective knowledge\, and improve our world when we simply ask\, “What if…?” \nThis year the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science is asking: What if everyone could have equal access to health care? \nImagine driving two hours just to fill your prescription or living in a town where there is no immediate care for your sick child. For nearly 800\,000 Washingtonians living in rural areas\, this is a reality. The Rural Health Initiative will replenish pharmacy deserts with the most accessible health care provider: the pharmacist. What if in 10 years\, all Washingtonians had accessible health care regardless of where they live and work? \nLearn more

SUMMARY:Allen I. White Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The WSU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is very excited to welcome Kathy Giacomini\, PhD to speak at the 2023 Allen I. White Lecture. \nKathy Giacomini\, dean and professor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of California\, San Francisco\, is a leader in the field of membrane transporters with a focus on genetic polymorphisms. Her contributions include cloning\, characterizing and discovering the endogenous role of the human transporters\, OCT1 (SLC22A1) and CNT2 (SLC28A2). She and her team published functional genomic studies of missense variants in over 15 transporters in the Solute Carrier Superfamily (SLC). Recently\, they de-orphaned SLC22A15 and SLC22A24\, discovering that the transporters have unique ligand specificities and important biological and pharmacological roles. With others\, she co-founded the International Transporter Consortium\, which has published impactful manuscripts informing clinical pharmacology and regulatory policy. She is the Co-Principal Investigator of the UCSF-Stanford Center of Excellence in Regulatory Sciences and Innovation and Past President of the Pharmacogenomics Research Network. She has received numerous awards and is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. \nA reception in the Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences Building (PBS) Lobby will immediately follow the lecture. \nRSVP
