SUMMARY:Natural Product-Drug Interaction Research: Digging Through the Intricacies to Uncover Mechanisms and Improve Pharmacotherapy
DESCRIPTION:College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Mary Paine is the recipient of the prestigious ASCPT & FDA William B. Abrams Award this year. Join her this week as she discusses her research on natural product-drug interaction. \nDate: Wednesday\, May 19\, 2021\nTime: 8:00 – 9:30 am PDT\nVirtual Workshop: ADOBE Connect\nClick here for more info \nLecture Description:\nThe marketing and sales of botanical and other natural products (NPs) for health and wellness benefits continue to thrive worldwide. NPs are often used to supplement prescribed pharmacotherapeutic regimens\, increasing the risk for adverse NP-drug interactions. Common pharmacokinetic mechanisms underlying NP-drug interactions include inhibition and induction of drug metabolizing enzymes and transporters by the NP\, leading to altered systemic and/or tissue drug exposure and potentially\, negative health outcomes. Unlike for drug-drug interactions\, there are no harmonized recommendations for assessing NP-drug interactions. Because NPs are inherently complex and variable chemical mixtures\, a multidisciplinary effort involving clinical pharmacologists\, NP chemists\, biomedical informaticists\, and health communications experts is needed for rigorous assessment and dissemination of the drug interaction liability of NPs. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health established the Center of Excellence for Natural Product Drug Interaction Research in 2015. One deliverable of the Center is a set of recommended approaches to guide researchers in the optimal conduct of NP-drug interaction studies. These recommendations are based on results generated from a series of completed and ongoing interaction projects examining methodically selected NPs as precipitants of potential clinically significant pharmacokinetic NP-drug interactions. The aggregate data are being entered into a repository\, which is disseminated to researchers via a website (napdicenter.org). The efforts of the Center should lead to improved design of future NP-drug interaction research and ultimately\, evidenced-based information for health care providers\, educators\, and consumers about how best to manage these complex interactions.

SUMMARY:Pharmacy Homecoming Weekend – CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:After careful consideration\, and due to the surge in new COVID-19 cases\, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Crimson Gala that was scheduled for Friday\, October 8\, 2021\, at the Spokane Convention Center. The CPPS mission and vision is “to be a leader in advancing\, promoting and protecting human health.”  Therefore\, we simply could not proceed with an in-person gathering that could potentially be a conduit for more cases of the delta variant of COVID-19. \nWe discussed this decision with John Oftebro\, who was slated to receive the R. Keith Campbell Lifetime Achievement Award. Rather than proceed with a virtual gala we’ve decided to postpone the Crimson Gala until sometime in 2022.  Both John and the CougaRx Nation alumni board concur with this decision. We are tentatively planning to host a virtual Pharmacy Homecoming event on Friday\, October 8 and we welcome your input on this matter. We held a similar virtual event last year and it was a well-attended success. \nAfter careful consideration we have also decided not to host a Tailgate during Homecoming Weekend this year. \nHowever\, we do hope that any College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences alumni who are going to the game enjoy themselves and have the chance to catch up with fellow CougaRx alumni and friends. To that end we have set up a block of seats to help you all find one another. If you purchase your Homecoming Football tickets through this link\, you will be seated alongside fellow CPPS alumni\, faculty\, staff\, students\, and friends who are also attending the game. \nA reminder: Masks are currently required at all times during football games unless actively eating or drinking and beginning in October WSU Athletics will require proof of vaccination for COVID-19 for fans 12 years of age and older. Those who are not vaccinated will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the event. See full details \nFor those that have purchased tickets and/or sponsorships\, there are a couple of options: 1) we can hold your contribution and use it for the 2022 Crimson Gala\, 2) we can issue a refund\, or 3) we would be honored to consider your gift as a charitable donation that will benefit pharmacy student scholarships. If you would be so kind as to reach out to Kelly Sylvester\, Director of Development at kelly.sylvester@wsu.edu or call 509-368-6675\, we can provide more details. \nOn behalf of everyone at the college\, we appreciate your support and understanding\, and we share your frustration. We will provide details for the college’s virtual homecoming event as the dates approach.
