SUMMARY:Career Seminar Series: Professional Pathways in Pediatric Pharmacy and the Need for Professional Leadership
DESCRIPTION:Emily Benefield (’08) is the Director of Hospital Pharmacy Services at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Dr. Benefield’s journey began at Washington State University\, where she earned her Bachelor of Sciences and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees. During her PGY1 and PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residencies at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center\, Dr. Benefield found her calling as a pediatric pharmacist. Upon completion of her post-graduate training\, Dr. Benefield practiced at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital in the Pediatric and Cardiac Intensive Care Units. She subsequently transitioned her practice to the Solid Organ Transplant services\, caring for pediatric organ recipients throughout the continuum of care. During this time\, Dr. Benefield served as the PGY1 Residency Site Coordinator and founded the PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy residency at Primary Children’s Hospital\, demonstrating her commitment to developing the next generation of pediatric pharmacy leaders. \n  \nDr. Benefield joined the leadership team at Seattle Children’s Hospital as the Pharmacy Clinical Programs Manager leading a team of highly qualified\, decentralized pharmacists and impacting the care of pediatric patients on a larger scale. She was promoted to the Director role with oversight over the inpatient pharmacy operations\, decentralized pharmacy services\, and the investigational drug service. Dr. Benefield concurrently earned her Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of Utah while serving the patients and team members at Seattle Children’s.
