Meet the Dean

Gary M. Pollack, Ph.D. Gary M. Pollack, Ph.D.

Gary M. Pollack, Ph.D., has been the dean of the Washington State University College of Pharmacy since 2010. Prior to joining WSU, he was a member of the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy, from 1984 to 2010, and served as chair of that school’s Division of Drug Delivery and Disposition (1992 through 2004) and executive associate dean (2004 through 2010). Pollack received a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and psychology from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, and his Ph.D. in pharmaceutics with a concentration in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Pollack’s research has centered on the disposition and action of drugs and toxicants in the central nervous system. His group made major contributions towards understanding the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of opioid tolerance, including the key role of nitric oxide in the loss of response to morphine. In addition, his students have examined the influence of barrier transporters on substrate permeation across the blood-brain interface, drug distribution within the brain, and pharmacologic activity of CNS therapeutics.

Pollack has mentored more than 40 graduate, undergraduate and postdoctoral students in his laboratory and has authored over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters and scientific abstracts. He is a fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

See Dr. Pollack's faculty bio page for more details.
