Cougar pharmacists are some of the most highly sought-after pharmacy professionals for their expertise, professionalism and entrepreneurial spirit. One of the contributing factors to this is that Cougs are notoriously generous when it comes to mentoring, precepting or volunteering with the next generation of WSU student pharmacists. In fact, one of the things that sets the WSU College of Pharmacy apart from other pharmacy programs is the sense of community that comes from being a WSU Cougar.
As our late president Elson S. Floyd put it, “There is something special about WSU and even more special about being a Coug. It’s about family taking care of family.”
Our student pharmacists have coined it the “Cougar Pharm-ily.”
“When I came for my interview here I could tell that there was a really, really great sense of community. I could just see it among the faculty and among the student ambassadors that were at my interview and just thought that everyone was really welcoming,” said Jessica Chung, class of 2016. “I could tell that I would fit right in.”
The longstanding community within the College of Pharmacy cultivates a leadership and support mentality. Class cohorts of student pharmacists develop permanent close-knit bonds, as evidenced this past year by the class of 1965 establishing an endowed scholarship fund and challenging all succeeding classes to do the same to pay it forward for the future of pharmacy.
As alumni and their families stay connected, their children often follow in their parents’ footsteps to become Cougar pharmacists. The result is there are a growing number of families with several generations of WSU pharmacy alumni. We count this as a great point of pride that so many amazing pharmacists have chosen to be a part of our Cougar Pharmily, year after year.
